HIGH SOCIETY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
HIGH SOCIETY, Grace Kelly’s last film before she became a real life princess, was made 50 years ago this year.
She even wore the skating rink of an engagement ring she received from Prince Rainier of Monaco on screen.
The MGM musical that was Cole Porter's take on the film "The Philadelphia Story" moved the setting from the city of brotherly love to Newport to revolve around the excitement of the Newport Jazz Festival. So Kathy Staab, owner of the Jane Pickens Theater, couldn't let this year's JVC Jazz Festival-Newport take place without observing the special anniversary.
A screening of the film will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m. at the movie theater on Touro Street on Washington Square in Newport. A special champagne reception will be held beforehand and Staab was working on having the leading lady's son, His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco, visit the theater lobby for a few minutes en route to a private event before the festival's opening night concert. Prince Albert and members of the Princess Grace Foundation are guests of the Carnegie Abbey Club for this year's festival.
The headliner at Friday night's concert at 8 at The Casino at The International Tennis Hall of Fame, John Pizzarelli and his Big Band, will perform an all-out tribute to Frank Sinatra, one of the stars of "High Society." Tickets for the one showing of "High Society" cost $15 including the champagne reception and can be purchased at the door.
