NEWPORT, R.I. — How can you tell a film buff from a plain ol' moviegoer? Film buffs never eat popcorn and moviegoers never stay for the credits.

Not that it mattered at the premier party for Evening, a benefit for the Newport International Film Festival.

Film buffs, moviegoers and plenty of celebrity spotters turned out for the benefit for the Newport International Film Festival, which took place June 9, the festival's closing night.

The Evening evening — oh, ha ha ha — included the red carpet walk, a screening at the landmark Jane Pickens Theater, and post-screening cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and dancing.

Evening was filmed entirely in Rhode Island, and marks the English-language film debut for Hungarian-born director Lajos Koltai.

The drama explores the romantic past and emotional present of a dying woman and stars Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Eileen Atkins, Toni Colette, Natasha Richardson, Claire Danes and Mamie Gummer.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Newport International Film Festival.
