SOUND OF MUSIC SINGALONG & LA SCALA OPERA SERIES

'Sound of Music' sing-along shows change of range at Pickens
By James J. Gillis/Daily News staff

NEWPORT - The Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center is blending film and music this weekend with two events.

On Friday, the theater is holding a "Sound of Music" sing-along at 6 p.m. Owner Kathy Staab is screening the movie and the audience is invited to sing along with tunes such as "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi."
"We'll have words on the screen and a bouncing ball," Staab said. "Everyone knows these songs. It's a chance for people to sing along."

Patrick Grimes will emcee and audience members are invited to show up in costume. "It's going to be a great night," Staab said, "a lot of fun. I'm already getting a lot of response." Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

On Sunday, the theater will debut its La Scala Opera Series, showing high-definition film versions of opera performances. The series starts with Verdi's "Aida" at 1 p.m. The performances are filmed in high definition and distributed throughout the country.

"This is something we've never tried before," Staab said. "A lot of it comes through my relationship with Emerging Cinemas (which brings first-run art-house movies to smaller cities), and there's definitely in interest in our community. We will have them on different days and nights, it depends."

Monthly future screenings include performances of "Tristan and Isolde" and "La Traviata." For the full slate, visit www.janepickens.com. Tickets to Sunday's screening cost $20 and tickets to see the series cost $100.

The theater officially changed its name to the Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center, capitalizing on Staab's wish to include more live events in addition to films.

"At this point, we're an event center that includes movies," she said.
